Recently, there was a crowdfunded campaign running for a 3D printed timepiece on MyMiniFactory – a 3D file marketplace. Mechanistic, a mechanical engineer with an interest in watches and 3D printing, designed an “high end, triple-axis timekeeping mechanism designed to be 3D printed on consumer grade FDM systems”. This 3D printed version runs for about 90 minutes if used with a steel spring or as little as 15 minutes with a PETG spring – but the timepiece was never intended to be a long-term mechanism. The maker says he made it with the “intention of being a functional mechanical sculpture that gives users a first-hand understanding and experience in the assembly and construction of the luxury mechanism”.
