Part-Time Bench Jeweller

We are looking for a practical, quality-focused Bench Jeweller to join us two days per week on a part-time basis. We are at the early stage of setting up our in-house bench area, so this role combines hands-on repair, polishing and QA work with advice on tools, equipment, supplier questions and safe working processes. As well as core bench work — including ring resizing, repairs, polishing and quality checks — you will help us build a small, efficient in-house workshop function from the ground up.

£32,000–£36,000 FTE; pro rata £12,800–£14,400 for 2 days/week, depending on experience.

Jeweler Job

Responsibilities of role

Core bench work:

  • Assess jewellery items before work begins and advise whether repair, resizing, polishing, adjustment or improvement is suitable.
  • Assess and resize suitable rings where technically appropriate, with particular care around hollow, lightweight, stone-set, plated or delicate constructions. Advise clearly when resizing or repair is not recommended, too risky, or should be outsourced.
  • Carry out suitable soldering and minor bench repairs, including chain repairs, jump ring repairs, clasp repairs, earring post repairs and small component adjustments.
  • Polish, clean and refinish jewellery to a saleable standard.
  • Carry out quality checks on incoming stock and imperfect items, advising whether pieces can be repaired, improved, sold, returned to the supplier or rejected.
  • Keep clear repair notes and communicate what work was completed, what was not possible, and why.

Workshop setup and supplier support:

  • Help us set up a small in-house bench/workshop function from the ground up.
  • Advise on essential tools, consumables, safety requirements and equipment priorities.
  • Help define which tasks can be handled in-house and which should remain outsourced.
  • Support supplier/manufacturer follow-ups by advising on product construction, materials, repair limitations and suitable equipment.
  • Help create internal repair, cleaning, polishing and QA procedures.

Requirements of candidate

Essential:

  • Proven professional bench jewellery or jewellery repair experience.
  • Strong practical bench skills across repair, polishing, cleaning and finishing.
  • Experience resizing rings, including hollow, lightweight or delicate rings.
  • Experience working with precious metals.
  • Good knowledge of soldering and practical bench repair techniques.
  • Ability to assess jewellery construction before attempting repair or resizing.
  • Strong understanding of when an item should not be repaired, resized or altered.
  • High attention to detail and strong quality-control standards.
  • Ability to work independently in a small business environment.
  • Clear communication skills, especially when explaining technical limitations to a non-technical ecommerce team.
  • Reliable, organised and able to work to agreed priorities and deadlines.

Desirable:

  • Experience with e-commerce jewellery, QA or production workflows.
  • Experience advising on workshop setup, tools, consumables and supplier questions.
  • Experience with claw checks, retipping or minor setting-related repairs.
  • Background in a trade workshop, independent jeweller, Birmingham Jewellery Quarter workshop or similar environment.
  • Apprenticeship, HND, degree or equivalent bench-trained background welcome, but proven bench ability matters most.

Benefits

  • Flexible part-time role, 2 days per week.
  • Friendly, supportive small-business environment.
  • Opportunity to help shape a new in-house workshop function from the ground up.
  • Potential for the role to grow into additional days or a full-time position as our in-house workshop function develops.
