Overview:
The art of making clocks and watches is known as horology, and watchmaking truly is an art as well as a craft. Watchmaking itself requires strong mechanical reasoning skills. To create a watch movement, the watchmaker must be able to correctly place a myriad of gears and a mainspring in their proper positions. Also, a watchmaker needs good manual dexterity, including a well-developed sense of touch, and keen eyesight to manipulate dozens of extremely small components with jewel-like precision.
Responsibilities:
Watchmaking and watch repair require a clean working environment, mainly because even very small particles of dust and dirt can befoul a watch movement. Customers that appreciate mechanical watches are frequently attached to their timepieces, so watchmakers must have good communication and customer service skills. Watchmakers are also expected to keep detailed records of their work and have an ability to correctly estimate repair costs. Additionally, watchmakers must be able to refinish cases and repair or replace glass watch face coverings.
Qualifications:
- Repairs and servicing: Watchmakers perform repairs, replace parts, and perform routine cleaning and servicing.
- Part fabrication: Watchmakers may fabricate parts that are no longer in production.
- Tool maintenance: Watchmakers maintain tools in good working order and select the appropriate tools for servicing and repairing watches.
- Battery replacement: Watchmakers test and replace batteries and other electronic components.
- Record keeping: Watchmakers record quantities and types of timepieces repaired, serial and model numbers, work performed, and charges for repairs.
- Demagnetization: Watchmakers demagnetize mechanisms using demagnetizing machines.
- Prototyping: Watchmakers assist production designers with prototyping, trials, and testing.
- Workshop maintenance: Watchmakers maintain a clean workshop.
- Deadline meeting: Watchmakers meet assigned daily deadlines.
