Voters in the Lake and Peninsula boroughs approved a plan that would stop the construction of the Pebble Gold Mine in Bristol Bay, Alaska.

The controversial project that would produce gold and copper has locals upset over the potential loss of salmon habitat and the fishing business that accompanies it. Many jewelers, including Zales and Tiffany & Co, have signed pledges crafted by environmental groups promising not to by Pebble Mine gold.

According to a release from Pebble Mine Partnership, the vote conducted by mail came out with 280 residents against the mine and 246 for it. The Partnership and the state of Alaska plan to challenge to vote in Alaska’s Superior Court as unconstitutional because the project would occur on state-owned lands.
