Full Job Description
The Bench Jeweler completes basic jewelry repair on sterling silver and karat-gold jewelry with little assistance. With guidance from trainer begins to perform intermediate jewelry repairs on karat-gold and begins to work with platinum. Practices and develops learned techniques to improve skills and increase qualify and speed of work. Receives new types of work to improve skill level.
Ideal candidate should have 1-2 years of Jeweler experience.
Responsibilities and Duties:
•Examines jewelry for restrictions in design, identifies gems and considers gemstone limitations. Proceeds with basic jewelry repairs using all precautions necessary to complete work.
•Performs miscellaneous basic repairs without assistance and begins intermediate level repairs on karat-gold and platinum under trainer’s instruction (i.e. tighten or remove stones in various setting styles, various adjustments using hand tools and/or soldering, etc.).
•Performs basic soldering techniques without assistance for sizing and re-shanking rings, chain and clasp repairs, and miscellaneous sterling silver and karat-gold.
•Performs basic prong setting of 4 and 6 prong heads with round stones under trainer’s instruction.
•Performs basic re-tipping and re-pronging assignments in karat gold.
•Performs basic LASER welding techniques.
•Applies all types of surface finishes (florentine, brush, mizzy, etc.) using polishing wheels, brushes, sandblasting, etc.
•Organizes jobs according to due dates and maintains a clean work area on a daily basis.
•Polishes jewelry during various stages of repair process using flex-shaft, polishing lathe, various cleaners, steamer, etc.
•May rotate as jeweler in the shop pod and performs various jeweler duties. Answers associate’s questions concerning repairs needed, job charges, job complexity, etc. May visit with customer to discuss concerns/questions regarding repairs.
•Reviews incoming job envelopes received for repair, stock, appraisal, engraving, etc. for complete instructions, type and amount of work needed, charges and completion date. Verifies merchandise in envelope matches job envelope description.
•Sorts “rush” jobs and forwards to Issue and QC as needed.
•Follows SDS guidelines and proper procedures for using, maintaining, storing, and eliminating all chemical solutions associated with required work. Follows equipment safety procedures at all times.
•Participates in and satisfactorily completes all assigned training programs and seminars.
•Performs other related duties as requested by supervisory personnel.
Essential Job Functions:
•Ability to work assigned schedule on a regular basis.
•Ability to communicate with customers, co-workers, and business contacts in a courteous and professional manner.
•Ability to see well enough to read small print, with aid of minor magnification size rings, set stones, re-tip prongs, detect unevenness in shanks and prongs, check quality of work on small parts or entire pieces of jewelry items, and read computer screens.
•Ability to hear and speak well enough to converse with others in person, via telephone and paging system.
•Ability to move about the store from department to department, get behind narrow counter areas, and bend down or reach up into drawers/shelves.
•Dexterity to write in small print, to hold on to and use all jewelers’ tools, handle small jewelry/gift items while repairing, do repetitive motions with hands, and bend over and pick up dropped materials.
•Stamina to sit for over eight hours and focus on small detailed work.
•Ability to work in a shop environment i.e. elevated noise, steamer, minor dust, etc.
•Strength to push and exert pressure while using various jewelers’ tools.
•Ability to work with exposure to chemicals, low-voltage plating equipment, flammable materials, and fast-moving machinery.
